Costume Annotated Bibliography Resource Guide

Resource Guide to Costume

Prepared by Social Sciences Department

Costume is the particular style of clothing that is popular at a particular time and place.  It is the prevailing fashion in coiffure, jewelry and apparel of a period, country, or class.  Costume includes all the different garments, accessories, and ornaments worn by people throughout the world.  It is closely related to fashion, but differs as to time period.  Fashion is usually considered with the popular mode of dress of the present, while costume deals with the mode of dress of the past and is more established.

Under this subject heading (costume) and with local subdivisions are works entered on the discipline of costume.  Here are works on the clothing of particular places or periods, as well as on costume for the theater, movies, or special occasions, i.e. court receptions, carnivals, and masquerades.  Works on clothing from the standpoint of utility as a covering for the body, and works on the art of dress are entered under "Clothing and Dress."  The subdivision "Clothing" under names of individual persons may also be searched.  The subdivision "Costume" under classes of persons, ethnic groups and individual articles of apparel may be searched.  Narrower terms under individual articles of apparel may be searched, i.e. kimonos, shoes, biblical costume, jewelry, fans.
